Chapter 14

Alex plastered a smile on his face as he opened the door to Todd

Mitchell on his doorstep. “You’re here?”

“It’s safer for me this way. I hope you meant your invite. I don’t mean to intrude, but as you can imagine, Kelsey is not happy I’ve returned.

You know what they say about a woman scorned and she seems determined to teach me a lesson.”

Obadiah appeared at the door, bared his teeth and growled. Alex felt the same way, but since he’d offered, he had no choice but to let Todd inside the house. He couldn’t go back on his word, no matter how much he might want to. “Let me put the dog out back.”

Todd was still speaking when he came back into the room. “I’m hoping to arrange a meeting with Pastor Underwood before I head back to Laos.

I think it would be good for him to talk to Kelsey about her hardened heart. A marriage can’t succeed when a heart is hardened.”

“I thought you didn’t want the marriage to succeed,” he said.

The man grinned as if he held some great secret to the universe. “I want Kelsey to know the Lord. I want to know that my children aren’t being raised to think of their father…of men in general, as the enemy. Right now, I can’t guarantee that. Kelsey’s not in the church. She’s not living a godly life and she thinks I’m to blame for all of her problems. What kind of man would I be if that didn’t concern me?”

Alex’s jaw tightened hearing Kelsey spoken about in such disrespectful terms — and by the man who had sworn to love and cherish her. Alex wasn’t a violent person, but the idea of parading Kelsey in front of Underwood for another helping of submission-gone-wrong-talk made him want to hit something. “So you’re saying you do want the marriage to work out then?”

“I’m saying that we could have worked on it if Kelsey’s heart wasn’t hard. There is no forgiveness in her soul. A marriage can’t succeed when a partner can’t forgive.”

“If you want to work on the marriage, I suggest you move back to the States to be with your family.”

“I did everything in my power to bring Kelsey and the kids to Laos. She’s so defiant, and all she wanted to do was accuse me of seeing other women. I think she has some definite issues with paranoia. When my son called me from the hospital, I honestly had to stop and wonder if this was another one of Kelsey’s ploys to lure me back into her web.”

“I thought you were here for a divorce.”

Todd offered up a broken expression. “Is that what she’s told you? That I’ve come for a divorce?” Todd checked out the pictures on the mantel before he faced him with a direct, hard gaze.

“I came to make sure my kids were safe, even though I thought this might be another one of her episodes and not Meagan being sick at all. I’m worried about her with the kids.
